BookmarkFiles keeps the text files you open every day, such as notes, checklists, templates and small data files, in one list on the left, and shows the file you pick on the right.

Why we built it

Many of us keep a few small files that we open over and over, and they live in different folders on different drives. Finding them is slow, and desktop editors treat each one as a separate window. We wanted something closer to a bookmarks bar for files: a single place where one click opens the file, you can edit it, and a keystroke saves it back to where it already lives.

What makes it different

• Your files stay yours. The page reads and writes the files you choose directly on your computer. File contents are never uploaded.
• Nothing to install. It runs in Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer. There is no account and no sign-in.
• Organized without moving anything. Folders, order, descriptions and saved layouts only organize the list. Your real files are never moved, copied or renamed.
• Built for repeated work. Multi-select, drag and drop, find and replace across files, right-click menus and keyboard shortcuts keep routine edits fast.

Everything it can do

• Open, edit and save text files on your own computer, right in the browser, with Save and Save All
• Add files with a file picker, or drag them in from File Explorer. Drop on the list to add, or on the editor to open
• Label files with descriptions, add optional path notes, and drag rows to reorder them
• Group files in one-level folders. Drag files and folders, rename folders, and use right-click menus
• Select several files with Ctrl and Shift, then save, close or move them together
• Find a word or sentence, replace it in selected files, or replace it in every open file
• Save your list structure as a layout and load it later. Files reconnect by name, and missing files are clearly marked and easy to replace or remove
• Search by file name, description or content
• Preview HTML files, switch word wrap, change the text size, print, and choose a light or dark theme
• Read UTF-8 and EUC-KR files, keeping the original BOM and line endings
• No account, no upload and nothing to install

How it is made

BookmarkFiles is a small, static website written in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. There is no backend that receives your data. The site is delivered over HTTPS from Cloudflare. The fonts are served from this site as well, so opening a page does not contact other companies' servers.
